Sports Massage

Specializing in competition preparation & recovery, scar tissue mobilization, back, hip, and knee pain, lymphatic drainage, and injury recovery/ management.

“It says that Melissa works with women and girls, but my husband/boyfriend/brother/male colleague would like massage. Can I refer him to her?” Yes! If you know and trust a male athlete who would like to get sports massage, feel free to refer him. I do work with men, it’s just that my main focus is working with women and adolescents/ teens.

Fertility Support

For women who would like to become pregnant. This treatment works with abdominal tension, uterine and uterine ligament tension, visualization and verbal coaching.

What is a fertility session like? It’s a mix of hands-on work and verbal coaching. When I’ve helped women with fertility issues, I’ve found that there is a mix of things going on. They often have a long-term tension pattern in the hips and/or low back that has affected the way their uterus is positioned in their pelvic bowl. I help to release the uterus and uterine ligaments so that the organ receives improved nerve connection and blood flow. This is like releasing the uterus so it can become its most vibrant healthy self, and get ready to bring your baby into the world.

The other block that comes up in fertility issues, in my experience, is more of an energetic/ emotional piece. When I work with a woman’s uterus, there is often an emotional aspect that surfaces. We address this gently and lovingly which seems to have a profound impact on the uterus.

To date, I’ve been able to help each and every fertility client become pregnant within days or weeks of their first two treatments, as long as they have access to a healthy population of sperm*”

Is this work done internally or externally? All of the uterine work I do is gentle and external, and is done through the belly.

*I cannot promise that a woman will become pregnant after working with me, but I will do what I can, within my skill set. If the male partner has fertility challenges, then the female partner will be less likely to become pregnant from our work together.

Self-Care Instruction

Personalized instruction in foam-rolling, scraping, self-massage, stretching & activation exercises for optimized comfort, recovery, and athletic performance.

“I don’t live in Tucson. Is there a way for me to receive self-care instruction from far away?”

Yes! I’ve had great success with real-time interactive video sessions for people who are far away. All you need is a foam roller and a computer or phone that has live two-way video capability. I may ask you to purchase a scraping tool and/or bands for these sessions as well. It just depends on what we’re working on.

Traveling With Athletes

Sports massage for traveling athletes and teams, tours, training camps, etc. Having a sports massage therapist on staff amplifies an athlete’s performance and significantly decreases the chance of injury. You will come out of your training time ahead of the game, rather than struggling to recover.

“How far is Melissa willing to travel in order to work with my team/ group?”

I’ve traveled to various parts of the U.S. as well as France to work with my clients. So…anywhere. Pricing will depend on how long I’m working with you, as well as travel expenses.

Hands-on sports massage given between events in competition helps an athlete recover more completely, and go to the next event with higher levels of energy.

Soigneur

Soigneur is a French word meaning “caretaker”.

Need an extra set of hands for your athletic training camp or tour? A soigneur is like a jack of all trades, helping with the tasks that you just don’t have time for, like driving support vehicles, food shopping, booking restaurants, and even sports massage to maximize your athletes’ performance and recovery. This way, you can focus on what you’re good at: training and guiding your athletes, and let them help with the details.

“I’ve never heard of a soigneur before. Is this a normal part of a training regimen for athletes?”

Yes, it’s normal for professional sports teams (usually cycling teams) to have a soigneur on staff, especially when traveling or participating in serious competitions. Soigneurs are like the “team mom”, making sure everyone is doing ok and has what they need.

The Adolescent/Teen Fitness Class In Action

The Adolescent/Teen Fitness Class In Action

Fitness Training

Offering local classes for Tucson adolescent and teenage kids.

Fitness training classes are CrossFit style, integrating bodyweight movements like push-ups, sit-ups, jumping squats, etc. with running, gymnastics movements like handstands, and self-awareness techniques to maximize athletic ability.

I encourage kids to find something from every class that they’re proud of, to give compliments to others, and to support their classmates to do their best. The true intention of these classes is to help kids find their self-confidence and to learn to manage their own thinking habits during an athletic effort. The classes are more about empowering kids to have a feeling of self-connection and pride than they are about fitness itself. The by-product is that kids in these classes become stronger, have better endurance, and improved coordination.

“Can a kid start at any time, or do they have to start on specific days or times of the month?”

Kids can start at any time. The fee is $45 per month for unlimited classes or $8 per class for drop-in. If they start in the middle of the month, I will pro-rate the fee. Movements will be tailored to their ability level. Beginners are always welcome, as are kids who have experience with athletic training.

“Are classes socially distanced? I’m concerned about Covid.”

Absolutely! I’ve been teaching this class since September of 2020, and we’ve been very careful. Workout spots are set up at least 6 feet apart, shared equipment is sanitized, and kids are allowed to wear a mask if there’s a part of the class when we are closer than 6 feet.
